I grew up in
the country of India as a missionary kid.
At that time, Northwest Baptist Seminary had
an extension seminary program in Bangalore,
India. Every summer, two of the professors
would give up some of their summer to come
to India and teach for 3 weeks, often
staying in our home. I got to know most of
the professors this way, and found them to
be men who loved the Lord greatly, and took
His Word seriously.
I came to
America for college, and after college began
thinking of seminary. I didn’t exactly want
more homework and papers to write, but I did
want to know the Lord better and understand
His Word better. I remembered the
professors at NBS that I had known as a kid,
and knew that they would be good men to
teach me, because of their passion for the
Lord and His Word.
Although I was
a Bible major at college, I quickly found
that I didn’t know the Bible nearly as well
as I thought – I didn’t even know what
questions to be asking!!! My time at NBS
was eye-opening to say the least. It was
there that I realized that theology is not
just something to learn and then fight over,
it is to be a part of our everyday life – a
part of our world view. I learned to
carefully study the Scriptures to find what
they were saying instead of reading into
them what I wanted them to say. Above all,
I grew in my understanding of who God is,
and that understanding increased my love for
Him.
Since
graduating from Seminary, the Lord has led
my wife Rachel and I back to the country of
India to help train men to be pastors in
India, by teaching in the seminary that
started out as an extension of NBS. Not
only has the school had a profound impact on
my life, it has had and will continue to
have an impact on the country of India both
through me and through the men it has
already trained there.
