Transfer Credit

Students transferring from accredited institutions of higher education must submit directly to the Director of Admissions an official record of all graduate work, indicating that the student was in good standing.  Credit may be given for courses with a grade of “C” or above that are comparable to those offered in this seminary. Acceptable credits earned in another institution are recorded on the permanent academic record, but only work completed at this seminary will be included in the Northwest Baptist Seminary grade point average.

All required courses in a program must be completed regardless of the number of credit hours transferred. All Northwest Baptist Seminary requirements must be met for graduation.

The following guidelines shall govern transfer credit:

      1. An official determination of transfer credit will be made after the

student has completed a full quarter (16 credit hours) of satisfactory academic work at Northwest

          Baptist Seminary.

      2. Prior to admission and initial registration, a student seeking transfer of credit on the basis of work

pursued at another institution should present to the Director of Admissions a transcript of the

previous work and a catalog containing course descriptions of the work for which he or she wishes

to receive credit at Northwest Baptist Seminary.

      3. After a student registers, requests for transfer credit should be presented to the Registrar.

      4. Transfer credit will not generally be granted for work which has previously been used as the basis

for the awarding of a degree by another institution. In the event that courses used toward credit

on an earlier degree duplicate courses prescribed in the Northwest Baptist Seminary curriculum, the

usual procedure is to substitute other equivalent courses to avoid duplication.

      5. The transfer credit granted will reduce accordingly the number of hours required at Northwest

          Baptist Seminary.

      6. M.Div. - up to 72 (50%) of the required 144 quarter hours may be transferred.

M.T.S. - up to 48 (50%) of the required 96 quarter hours may be transferred.

M.Min. - up to 16 (33%) of the required 48 quarter hours may be transferred.

Th.M./S.T.M. - up to 10 (22%) of the required 45/48 quarter hours may be transferred.

      7. The final 30 quarter hours must normally be taken in residence at Northwest Baptist Seminary.

For Present Students:

Students enrolled at Northwest Baptist Seminary who desire to take courses at another institution for credit to be applied to their degree must have the approval of the registrar or academic dean before enrolling in such courses.

PROGRAM MODIFICATION BASED UPON UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES

No transfer credit is given for undergraduate studies. However, when undergraduate courses clearly parallel prescribed courses in the master’s level curriculum, a student may request exemption from certain courses.  Competency in subject matter will be determined according to the following guidelines:

      1. A student must have completed forty semester or sixty quarter hours in biblical, theological, and

ministerial studies on the undergraduate level.

      2. A student must have begun his or her seminary studies within five years of the time he or she

          enrolled in the undergraduate course.

      3. At least eighty percent of the course content must parallel the content of the Seminary course, final

judgment being made by a comparison of typical course syllabi.

      4. A grade of “B” (3.0) or above must have been earned in the course(s).

      5. When undergraduate studies cover a course open for exemption, a maximum of six quarter hours

may be waived from any one field of study.

      6. A maximum of twenty-four quarter hours may be waived in the Master of Divinity program, or twelve

quarter hours in the Master of Theological Studies program. No credits may be waived in the Master

of Ministry program. Under certain circumstances a substitution of electives may be arranged in lieu

          of required courses.
